General courses
  • Mímir-símenntun offers Icelandic for foreigners from level one to level five as well as special courses in written and spoken Icelandic. The courses are 50 or 30 class hours and continue for 6 to 12 weeks. Both morning or evening courses are available. Intensive courses are also available evenings and mornings both for  beginners and advanced students. Intensive courses are taught  four days a week for six weeks.
  • In beginner courses English language is used as the support language. Special courses in Icelandic for foreigners are offered for people speaking Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Polish and other Slavic languages. In these groups the teacher speaks the  language of the group and uses it as a support language.
  • Advanced classes at higher levels are all taught in Icelandic and here the students are not grouped according to language. Advanced students who are starting school again are adviced to take the written and oral placement test which is offered at the beginning of each term.
  •
  • The course material is diverse and suitable for multicultural groups of adult learners. The teachers are trained in various teaching methods, for example in using games and activities that aim to increase vocabulary and speaking. All linguistic skills are practised, i.e. reading, listening, understanding, writing and speaking. The main emphasis is placed on everyday language. The course material is especially designed for each level and gradually increases in difficulty. The books Íslenska fyrir alla 1,2,3 by Sólborg Jónsdóttir and Þorbjörg Halldórsdóttir are taught on the first three levels.

Work related courses

  • Work related courses in Icelandic for foreign staff are a growing part of the programme of Mímir símenntun. Unions and the Ministry of Education support these courses. Work related courses are taught at the workplace during working hours. The schedule is designed in co-operation with the workplace. The course material consists of both general and professional vocabulary. This year a project is being developed where teaching methods and material  for hospital staff is being designed (and old material updated), in co-operation with Landspítali-Háskólasjúkrahús and supported by Starfmenntaráð and Efling-union.
