Icelandic language study

Levels
Our Icelandic language programme offers a wide range of Icelandic courses at five different levels. Training focuses on developing the four language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as working on grammar and building vocabulary.

Terms
Icelandic courses are offered during the autumn, spring  and summer terms.

Specialised courses
Specialised beginner's courses are offered for students who speak Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Polish and Russian. Special courses in writing and speaking are offered as well.

Hours
Both morning and evening classes are available. One class hour equals 40 minutes. Each session is three class hours (3x40 minutes) with a short break.

Placement test
A  placement test to evaluate what level best suits each student is offered at the beginning of each term and upon request at mimir@mimir.is or tel.: 580 1800.

Course fee

  •  60 class hour Icelandic: 31.500 ISK
  •  30 class hour Icelandic: 17.300 ISK

Note:  Most unions refund (partly) Icelandic courses upon proof of payment and a diploma.

Legal domicile and course fee
According to the government's policy on legal domicile  in relation with Icelandic for foreigners  there are  different prices for students with and without legal domicile.

  • Course fee for students with registered legal domicile for 60 class hour Icelandic:  31.500 ISK
  • Course fee for students without registered legal domicile  for 60 class hour Icelandic: 61.000 ISK

Note: Icelandic courses are based on the Curriculum of Icelandic for foreigners published by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.

Test for Permanent Residence permit
A test attesting to a proficiency in the Icelandic language, equal to 150 hours of Icelandic language studies, is available upon request. The test is both written and oral. Price: 4.500 ISK.

School for Settlers (Landnemaskólinn)
120 class hours of Icelandic lessons, lessons about Icelandic society and culture, computer lessons, real-competence file and more. The course is for people who have finished 180 class hours of Icelandic or have similar proficiency.

Counselling
Educational and career counsellors are available for students free of charge.
